Add text labels to a floor plan

Label rooms, departments and bays with Add text (T). Choose a preset, make labels face the camera or lie flat, and control size, halo and occlusion.

When to use the Text label tool

A text label is a piece of text pinned to one point on the map. Reach for it whenever you need words on the plan — room names, bay numbers, aisle letters, "STAFF ONLY", overhead sign copy, temporary notes. Text labels are their own shape kind so you can style, elevate, and rotate them independently of any shape they sit next to.

To open the tool: click the Draw button on the left toolbar and pick Add text, or press T on the keyboard. (No number-row shortcut for this one — T is the only key.) Saved labels are listed under Text labels in the side panel.

TOpen the Text label tool (Add text).

Typical labels are department names such as RECEIVING or CUSTOMER SERVICE, room names such as MEETING ROOM 2, and wayfinding cues such as STAIR 1, LIFTS or MAIN CORRIDOR. Each one is a separate label sitting on top of the room's area.

Placing a text label

The Text label tool is a one-click drop with a live preview. The moment the tool opens the cursor turns to a crosshair and a preview label follows the mouse using your current settings — text, size, colour, halo, preset. Click to drop.

  1. 1
Adjust the text and effects first (optional)

While the tool is active the side panel exposes every text setting. Type the text you want, pick a preset — the next label you drop uses those values. Your last-used settings are remembered in this browser.

  2. 2
Click on the map to drop

A new label (named "Text" in the side-panel list) lands at the click point with a default text of "Label" if you didn't change it, and is auto-selected. The tool stays active so you can drop several in a row. While the tool is active, clicks drop new labels even on top of existing ones — switch to Select (2, or hold Space) to pick an existing label.

  3. 3
    Exit when you're done

Press Esc or click Pan on the toolbar. (The "Stop placing" button sits in the Placement section, which only shows until the first label is placed and selected; after that, the panel edits the label you just placed.)

Five effect presets

The Content section holds the Text field and a five-button Preset strip. Each preset is a curated combination of halo and emissive glow (Subtle also caps opacity) that reads well against different basemaps — the presets get you close in one click.

PresetWhen to reach for it
NormalThe default. Uses your own Appearance settings exactly as set (a thin white halo out of the box).
GlowA soft, wider halo (yellow if your halo was white) and stronger emissive glow. Reads well against darker basemaps or in a dim 3D scene.
OutlinedA crisp black outline instead of a soft halo. Great for signage that should look printed.
SubtleThin white halo, low emissive glow, opacity capped at 80%. For fine-print labels you don't want dominating the scene.
SignHeavy 3 px white halo with no blur and extra glow, for signage-style labels — bay numbers, exit markers.

The side-panel sections

When one label is selected the side panel shows these sections, top to bottom. While the tool is active (nothing selected), the placement panel shows Content, Appearance, 3D & Altitude and Alignment for the next label.

Appearance — text, halo, glow

The Appearance section covers the text itself, the halo around it, and emissive glow. Everything is live; the map redraws as you drag.

ControlRangeWhat it does
ColorAny hexThe colour of the letters. Defaults to near-black.
Size8–72 pxText height in pixels (default 16).
Size behaviourFollow zoom · Fixed · In shapeFollow zoom (default) shrinks a bit at low zoom; Fixed always keeps the authored pixel size; In shape scales with the map so a room label stays inside its room as you zoom out.
Opacity10–100 %Overall transparency of the label.
Halo colorAny hexThe outline colour around each letter. Default white.
Halo width0–6 pxHow thick the halo is. 0 = no halo.
Halo blur0–6 pxHow soft the halo edge is. 0 = crisp outline, high = soft glow.
Emissive0–3 ×Self-lighting under the 3D lighting model. 1 keeps text readable; higher values let the label glow through dim basemaps.

Mode — Viewport (billboard) vs Map

A text label can orient two ways. The Alignment section has a two-button Mode picker.

ModeHow it behavesWhen to pick it
Viewport (default)A billboard that always faces the camera. Ignores the map bearing and camera pitch.Room names and asset labels — you always want them readable no matter which way the user is looking.
MapLies flat on the map. Tilts with the camera and rotates with the map bearing.Painted floor markings — a directional arrow, a lane label, text stencilled onto the floor.

Anchor — where the label sits relative to the point

The anchor decides which point of the label lands at the click location. It's a 3×3 grid of glyphs — corners, sides, centre. The default is centre, so the label centre sits on the click point.

  • Centre (default) — the label is centred on the point.
  • Top / Bottom / Left / Right — the label sits above / below / to the right / to the left of the point.
  • Top-left, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-right — corner anchors, for placing labels off the point in a specific direction.

Weight, case, letter spacing

The typography controls are two small button strips plus a slider.

ControlOptions
Weightregular · bold (default) · italic.
CaseAa (as typed) · AA (force uppercase) · aa (force lowercase).
Letter spacing−0.05 to 0.4 em — negative squeezes letters, positive spaces them out. Great for signage-style spacing.

Occlusion — labels behind 3D geometry

When labels sit inside 3D geometry — a rack, a wall, a floor above — you have a choice about what happens when they're hidden. The Occlusion slider in the 3D & Altitude section is that choice (default 0%).

  • 0 % — the occluded part of the label is fully hidden. Labels behind walls disappear the moment they should.
  • ~30 % — labels ghost through slightly. Useful when you want to hint at what's behind without cluttering the view.
  • 100 % — labels always visible, x-ray style. Every label reads no matter what's in front of it.

Three transforms — Move, Rotate, Scale

Text labels have three on-map transforms. Rotate and Scale show an orange drag handle; each commits when you release; to stop without a change, click the active button again. The keyboard works too: arrow keys nudge (Shift for bigger steps), [ and ] rotate ±1° (Shift ±15°), and − / + shrink or grow the text by 5%.

TransformHow it works
MoveClick on the label and drag to relocate it.
RotateAn orange dot appears around the label — drag it to rotate. Rotation is only visible when Mode is set to "Map".
ScaleAn orange dot appears near the label — drag it away to grow the text, toward the label to shrink.

Editing many labels at once

With the Select tool, Shift-click (or ⌘/Ctrl-click) labels on the map, or drag a rectangle with Marquee select (Q), to build a bulk selection. The side panel switches to "N labels selected" with the bulk actions plus Appearance and 3D & Altitude sections. Fields where the selected labels disagree show a "Mixed" badge.
